No, I would not recommend this to a friend
This is nice for shade and protection from most bugs, BUT it does not hold up to wind. We live in Iowa, had it for two summers and at the end of last summer (the 2nd summer) it ripped to shreds. Now we are left trying to find another one. Plus, we had to screw it to the deck, because the wind here would pick it up and toss it.
